Does aspirin at any dose thin out the blood, or the lower the better? Is it safer than tylenol, ibuprofen? I take regular strength aspirins, with the safety coats, and have no problem with them. Do aspirins at any strength thin out the blood, or is it the lower the better, or the higher the better? Is it better for your system than tylenol, or ibuprofen? Do tylenol or ibuprofen act as blood thinners too or just aspirin? If you take cholesterol lowering drugs, and aspirins, ...can this greatly reduce your chances of cardiovascular/circulatory type of problems? Thanks.

usafcmycloud replied: "All pain medication, whether over-the-counter or prescription, will can blood thinning to a degree. Aspirin has an extra ingredient in it that causes anti-clotting...thus the reason so many cardiologist recommend a baby aspirin for heart patients...not normally full-strength aspirin. Ibuprofen and Tylenol would probably be better if you're looking for pain relief. But, if you're concerned about heart health then you really need to be followed by a doctor. Self-medicating can cause greater or different problems that might never appeared otherwise. No matter what you take, when you take pain medication it's always good to eat with them. Having food in your system allows the medication and the acid in your tummy something to eat on, instead of just the medication. Added: I just looked up on Wikipedia Aspirin...it says there that persons under 19 should not take aspirin due to side effects of Reyes Syndrome. I don't know how old you are, but if you're under 19 you might be real careful about that."

Ed P replied: "If your using it to prevent heart problems I children's aspirin a day"

mj69catz replied: "First, Luke, You need to talk to your doctor before taking these medications to thin your blood. There is a lot more involved than just taking different aspirin. Generally, the more aspirin you take the thinner your blood gets. Because of this some doctors would recommend taking x baby aspirin, and then some drug manufacturers started making lower dose aspirin just for this purpose. While tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen can help with managing pain, and reduce fevers, and sometimes swelling, they aren't known for thinning the blood. BUT if you take too much of the wrong things or combination of drugs, it can cause problems - no matter what drugs. Check with your pharmacist and let them know what over-the-counter medication you are taking. They can work with your doctor to make sure you don't take medications that cancel each other out, or cause problems together."

How do you know what prescriptions you're taking are blood thinners? I'm having a procedure done on my neck and i have to stop taking blood thinners 5 day before the procedure. Right now I'm taking Tramadol APAP 37.5 (Generic for Ultracet) Skelaxin 800mg Fexofenadine 180mg (Generic for Allegra) Metformin 500mg Ibuprofen 800mg I'm pretty sure the Ibuprofen is a blood thinner but not sure about the rest..

Lone replied: "google them or call a pharmacist"

Chanhassen replied: "None of those are really considered blood thinners. Your ibuprofen has some platelt inhibiting effects, but not enough to bother stopping before a procedure. Blood thinners are durgs like: Lovenox Arixtra Fragmin and Coumadin also, sometimes, aspirin. I think you'll be just fine, and good luck with your surgery!"

Pain relievers if you cant take blood thinners? Are there any pain relievers a person can take if they are are currently on blood thinners. I know things like ibuprofen won't work, so what else is there that will work?

sharon red baron replied: "Tylenol is the only safe over the counter pain medicines while on blood thinners"

STEVE replied: "Generic Acetaminophen or Tylenol which contains the active ingredient acetaminophen."

Does Percocet thin the blood? I am having sinus surgery and was told all I will get for pain is some Tylenol. That just doesn't sit well with me as Tylenol has never had any effect on me. I was told no blood thinners like ibuprofen. I have some Percocet from a recent visit to the ER. Will that thin the blood and is that okay to take after surgery?

Spicy Chicken Sandwich replied: "Percocet contains Tylenol. HOWEVER the FDA is about to ban acetaminophen because it is very, very dangerous."

Lil Caesar replied: "i dont know but i'll take them percs if you cant take em , ha"

I think I have anemia, or bronchitis or pneumonia. If you have any medical training advice would be great.? For the past couple of weeks I've been under a lot of stress and have been working like crazy so I've ignored a lot of symptoms. I've been incredibly tired, fevers, soar throat, light headinesss, coughing up phlegmm, cold symptoms and I think there may be a small amount of blood in my stool. However that may be because I take alot of aspirin and ibuprofen ( blood thinners) for carpal tunnel. I'm going to a doctor as soon as I have enough money ( low income job ) but for now any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Alex S replied: "have you tasted the stool?"

teejay_mc replied: "When you do see the doctor remember to tell him more than you've given us here. Tell him about the phlegm, especially its colour. Also, if you have chest pains or previous history of asthma. Do you have difficulty breathing? Do you wake up at night, out of breath? Also, how did you notice the blood in your stools? Did you see it as bright red, separate from the stools or did you notice your stool colour changing? (Note: Aspirin and Ibuprofen don't do that. That's not how it works.) Get Well soon!"

Brandie98_98 replied: "Actually, ibuprofen and aspirin in large quantities have the potential for causing gastric bleeding, causing vomit that looks like coffee grounds and blood in stool. Ibuprofen does not thin the blood, but reduces inflammation. I understand that it may be hard to get into a doctor, but these things could be serious, and the sooner a doctor can look you over, the better."

Lissa replied: "with bronchitis you get s deep, painful, dry cough. it's hard to say for sure what could be causing your symptoms, they are very common. i feel you on the low income end of the deal, but i waited so long to see a doctor for my bronchitis that i ended up having it for 10 straight months. as far as pneumonia, well, at any hospital i have ever worked at, pneumonia patients are always put in isolation because #1 they are so highly contagious and #2 they are dangerously suseptible to other illnessess because of a weakened immune system. if you are young and generally healthy, you should turn out to be fine, but yes, i have seen people die from things like this. your doctor can bill you, and you can set up payment arrangements. please don't mess around with your health. i learned at a very young age that something you might not feel is serious, could turn life threatening. i don't want to scare you, but, if you don't have your health, then what do you have? take care of yourself. and good luck! P.S. -- get a flu shot this year!"

TINANASH replied: "From your signs and symptoms I will stress that you see your doctor ASAP.Bearing in mind of your circumstance - low income. You do sound like you have an caught an air borne disease, by one of your signs & symptoms. The cold virus can easily infect the people you come in contact with. So if it is true that you have it not only are you putting your own self at risk by not seeing your doctor for a proper diagnose and treatment, but you are putting others that come in contact with you at risk, especially people with very low immune system or at more risk from common infections. On the rest of your signs and symptoms I choose only to say you must seek medical help. If it is possible to stay at home until you can see the doctor I will suggest you do that. I will also add that please feel free to contact me for more explanation as to why its vital that you do not participate fully in society with your signs and symptoms. Meanwhile stand in a mirror, put your finger on the top of your upper chick bone under your eyes. Press it down opening the eye and exposing the inside of your eye lid. Then look in the mirror to see the if the blood capillaries under your eyes are pale or has it got red lines. If its pale then could suggest anaemia. That said you still need blood test for confirmation. I have tried to be as factual and kind as I can here but the bottom line is you need to see your doctor. I wish you all the best and speedy recovery."

Is aspirin a blood thinner? I am to be off blood thinners for 7 days. I usually take ibuprofen but I know I can't take it. Is aspirin a blood thinner. ( I have a bottle of store brand)

Marvin B replied: "yes"

Linda replied: "Yes Asprin is. If you need something for pain take tylenol"

Rigo replied: "Yes, Aspirin thins blood. That's why it's recommended to people with diabetes or heart conditions on a daily basis. I would ask your local pharmacist about another alternative. Linda is right. Tylenol (Acetaminophen) won't thin your blood though."

Rod B replied: "YES!!! avoid aspirin as long as you are advised to stay away from blood thinners. Also avoid vitamin E."

Leftover C replied: "Yup it is...I think it lowers blood pressure =P Ummm just find brands that use paracetomol instead and you should be fine miss =]"

a_beautiful_wreck replied: "No asprin, ibruprofen or aleve before surgeries or procedures. If you are in pain in the meantime, contact your doctor and ask for a prescription, or take tylenol."

evanlouis15 replied: "Yes, it is. You need to ask your dr. or pharmacist what you can take for pain in the interim because it cannot be aspirin or ibuprofen."

bilkeo replied: "Yes it is, which is why a low dose is sometimes recommended for people with certain heart conditions. On a more important note. There are probably better places to get this type of information on the Internet than Yahoo answers. How do you know how credible the answers you receive are? Anybody with no knowledge could be telling you what to do. For a serious health question like the one you have, go to a medical site, where teh quality of answer is going to be better."

Kacey D replied: "yes aspirin is a blood thinner."

pooterilgatto replied: "Aspirin makes the platleets flow more smothly so they will not stick, to the walls of the artheries. I was informed by my MD that Aspirin does not thin blood. Call your Physician and ask."

What is the appropriate treatment for a DVT (blood clot) in lower left leg (calf)? A little more history: 49 year old female, diabetic, high bp, high cholesterol, hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, severe depression, PTSD, bipolar, major anxiety, sleep apnea, and liver disease due to extreme fatty liver. On 16 daily meds for psych and med, plus a 17th optional for nausea as needed, and 18th for stool softener. Her meds: Docqlace, Cytomel, Lexapro, Famotidine, Promethazine, Metoclopramide, Metformin, Trazodone, Hydroxyzine HCL, Cymbalta, Glimepiride, Levothyroxine Sod, Protonix, Lisinipril, Benztropine, Tricor, and Clozapine. Of those, 7 had warnings about anticoagulants, 4 of which were serious interactions, and 2 other meds have a rare side effect of causing clots (research on WebMD). This person went to ER twice in 10 hours (sent home both times, told not to worry, talke Ibuprofen)then to her personal doc not even 2 days later, he put her on home injection blood thinners. She died the next night, clot broke loose, split, and traveled to both lungs.

Chakooch replied: "she died from pulmonary embolism its one of the complications of DVT ... as the clots may travel through the viens of the lower extrimities and get in to the lungs either as massive emolism or showering embolies ... well ... the effect of the drug interaction in a patient with long term uncontroled Diabetis , Hypertenssio , hypothyroidism in addition to psychological stress and depreesion ... and i suppose immobilisation ... the risk becomes morbidly high ... the appropriate treatment of DVT and preventing the pulmonary embolsm is by blod thinners pills or injections mobilisation is so very important Good Control of pre-excisting diseases avoiding drug interaction but never can obtain a 0% of risk or 100% of prevention. and for such cases it is done in a special care units my kindest regards and deepest sympathy Havoc"

DaBrat replied: "If I were you I would gather up all her medications, all her medical files and go see a lawyer. She was on way too many meds! Also people don't know the natural supplements that are out there with no side affects that can help with almost any problems. Doctors today are just to eager to prescribe medications. Also was she ever checked for factor 5? It is a rare blood clotting disorder and can only be found through a blood test specifically for factor 5. But still, if I were you, assuming you are a family member I would consult with a lawyer. Also, check out the site below to see what natural supplements can be taken in place of a lot of medications that are much better for you. They work because I have come off a lot of medications using them, even surprised my doctor and made a believer out of him."

I was diagnosed with an AVM, can I take ibuprofen for joint pain? My avm is aprox the size of a large marble, left temporal area, seems to be affecting my balance, speech...has not bled and was seen on my MRI. I'm lucky to have it found at this point. Gamma knife is an option I'm considering. My neuro surgeon, one of the best in California, says it's okay for me to continue taking 800mg ibuprofen for my osteorarthritis... I've been reading that NO blood thinners should be taken with AVM....who can I believe.... is there a list of meds or something so I can know what to take or not? Please, this is serious, so only answers that are true, honest and qualified.

Norma replied: "Check with your pharmasist. I take blood thinner and Ibuprofin is not compatible with them. I have had doctors randomly write prescriptions that were incompatible with others. I wish the FBI would investigate pharmaceutical companies for possible kickbacks to doctors and that the American Medical Association would do more to investigate the ability and knowledge of doctors."

Can you smoke marijuana two days before a tonsillectomy? I'm very absent minded and smoked marijuana last night even though i am getting my tonsils taken out monday morning. I signed a sheet of paper that said "seven days prior to the surgery date you can not be taking any of the following medications: aspirin, aspirin containing medications, advil, ibuprofen, motrin, vitamins, herbs or other supplements, blood thinners (example: Coumadin, Plavix)" Should I reschedule the surgery? I'm really worried about the anesthetics. I intend to run a lot and drink a lot of water within the next couple of days. Should I tell the doctor? Will he more than likely have me reschedule bc i don't really want my parents to find out.

MisMischievous replied: "You should be ok, but nothing else before surgery."

Howard replied: "i hope you wake up in the goddamn operation that will learn you for reading yahoo answers rather than TELLING YR DAMN DOCTOR"

stephanie replied: "A tonsilectomy only takes about 15 minutes, so staying knocked out shouldn't be the problem. I guess you could count marajuana as an herb and you should probably do a little research on it to see if it'll give you any strange effects with the anesthetic. You don't want to die. I'd suggest talking to your doctor."

Divine Oubliette replied: "The drugs they use to anesthetize you will in no way be effected by prior marijuana use. Looking at the list of no-nos it would seem they are only seem to be worrying about you taking blood thinners, they do not want you to bleed out from a very routine and simple operation. Marijuana is not a blood thinner, no you probably should not tell your doc even though it's against the Hippa Act (read illegal) for him/her to tell your parents they may feel obligated to, rescheduling isn't necessary either. Although you may want to abstain from smoking until the wounds are completely healed, extremely hot smoke on a open wound is not good and it will take longer to heal. Gargle with warm salty water to keep the wounds clean and you will be smoking again in no time. Good luck."

headaches....................................? i don't usually get headaches and i have had a small one for a few weeks now. well today it has gotten really bad. anybody know what causes them or a good way to get rid of them? i recently changed my diet. i am eating a lot of eggs and cucumbers. trying to cut carbs out. i have lost 10 lbs in the last month just with diet alone. very little exercise. just a few sit ups and conditioning exorcises a week. anything you can think of to help it subside would be great. i can't take ibuprofen or other pain meds that are blood thinners i can only have tylenol and that didn't' help.

Johrai M replied: "well there are lavindear i like that suff i get head aces alot i seem to find some ways to get ride of the i would say my best sucess is sleep and a nice hot bath. maybe you diet is one of the problem i am not you so i wouldnt know but my main answer is try sleeping messgae how that goes or i can tell you more on how to get reade of it if you message me."

Lyn replied: "One of the "diet" foods you are eating could be triggering it. Or you could have become a little anemic (low iron.) Try using a type of aromatherapy pain relief. Tea tree, peppermint, and/or eucalyptus work pretty well. You can get those at wholefoods or health food stores. Just put a little on your temples with a cotton ball. This should help."

armanigurl143 a replied: "changing your diet could be the reason just like someone who stops drinking pop all of the sudden usually gets headaches its just the body's reaction to not having something it has been used to being taken away or maybe could just be the weather depending on where you live cause allergies are pretty bad this year and could be the cause but im thinking it was just the change in your lifestyle anyways i myself suffer from headaches everyday and they can be tricky to get rid off and taking Oct's everyday really is not that healthy and they usually don't ever work for me just drink alot of water make sure its really important it may not seem like it can help but it does make a world of a difference go to a vitamin store and ask what can you take for natural Relief hot compress getting enough sleep for sure can help and if all fails see your doctor maybe he or she can have something prescribed until they go away or you figure it out...i really wish you luck headaches suck i know i rather throw up than have a headache"
